About Artist

Hi there,
my name is Karen  Irwin and I love glass.  Glass beads became a bit of an addiction and when I found out I could make my own it was all on.  I also create unique and funky  fused glass pendants and small original glass plates but lampworking remains my biggest joy.

I learned the lampworking process from Judith Sleavin of Annie Rose Ltd.  and have studied under a number of glass artists since then including Carol Marando, Peter Viesnick, Emily Lake and Kathryn Wardill.  I was stoked to place second in the 2008 NZGBA glass art awards and even more so when my bead "Rockpool Rhythm" took out the Best Lampworked Bead in 2009.

I have carved a niche in the new Zealand lampworking community by producing large organic focals and developing a technique whereby the lampwork designs can be transferred to fused glass pieces.

My studio is located in the gorgeous coastal town of Ruakaka Beach and is open to the public on a semi regular basis during the winter (call before visiting) and 7 days a week between October and March.  The creation of my studio is the first step in a larger plan , the second step of which is to introduce fused and slumped glass art pieces.  I hope to bring these on line  next year.

Look around and enjoy the eye candy.
